"Bad, Bad Corn" As I have written before, its funny what prompts an artist to choose a subject. I was strolling around a friend’s farm looking for subjects to sketch when I came across this crib of corn. Unlike the old cribs of wooden slats this is made of steel bars. The crazy thought came to me that these ears of corn were thrown in jail. Their sentence, rather than to reproduce their kind, was to be eaten by swine or some other creature of the farm. The silly thought did not remain for long but having stared at the subject rather intently I realized the magnificent structure, texture and color in front of me.. I couldn’t wait to get some watercolor paper stretched and begin painting. I started by drawing the bars of the crib and then started drawing each cob of corn. I quickly discarded the pencil and began painting the corn directly with the brush without benefit of pencil guidelines
